Dantherm Battery Compartment Cooling for Telecom

Battery Compartment Cooling targets energy savings in the overall site. This is done by dividing the room into different climate zones:

Dual Climate Zone - Dantherm Battery Compartment Cooling - CoolBox

You can generate substantial energy savings by using the two climate zone principle, only keeping the batteries (the temperature critical component) at a suitably low temperature and allowing a higher temperature in the rest of the room.
You simply raise the temperature set point, thereby using less energy.

If the CoolBox is combined with other energy saving passive cooling methods, you can generate huge energy savings. The CoolBox can be combined with free cooling, thermosiphons, heat exchangers or combi units. In very warm climates, even air conditioners can be used to cope with peak temperature loads.

Total Cost of Ownership analysis

In this Total Cost of Ownership analysis of 10 years from Germany, a 58%-saving is realized in a cellular site. The analysis is divided into 3 cooling methods:

  1. Cooling is done by means of a traditional air conditioner maintaining 23°C in the site to keep the batteries at a suitable temperature.
  2. Cooling is done by means of two different cooling methods, to keep 23°C in the site. Free cooling is used to a full extent and only when the outside temperature is to high, the traditional air conditioner is activated.
  3. Cooling is divided into two climate zones; zone 1, where the batteries are kept at 23°C - and zone 2, where the rest of the non-temperature sensitive radio equipment is kept at approximately 30°C by the installed free cooling system.

TCO analysis of Dantherm Compartment Battery Cooling

The analysis results in the following TCO during a 10 years period, calculated with a stable energy price:

  1.  36.000 EUR
  2.  19.000 EUR
  3.  15.000 EUR

The result is a 58%-saving over a 10-year period, when using dual climate zones with Dantherm’s Battery Compartment cooling in combination with a Dantherm Free Cooling Unit – compared to using a traditional Split Air Conditioner. Specifications of the vast majority of electronic equipment, including Radio Base Stations and routers in cellular sites, are specified to work well in temperatures up to above 45°C.

The difference in TCO from the 3 scenarios is highly affected by the energy consumption of the different cooling solutions. Contact Dantherm to learn more on dh@dantherm.com
